April 20, 2013: Brooklyn Folk Festival

In the middle of an action-packed sold out weekend of fantastic music and festivities at 5th annual Brooklyn Folk Festival, we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to put on a field recording workshop, cutting a split 78 with the legendary John Cohen on the banjo and the excellent Jackson Lynch on fiddle.  Thanks to Eli Smith, the Bell House, and the Jalopy Theater for a beautiful day, and to John and Jackson for lending us their voices.

No, we didn’t toss the banjo.

September 17, 2012: IFP’s Independent Film Week

The 78 Project was invited to participate in IFP’s Independent Film Week in New York as part of the Spotlight on Documentaries. We were so honored, and we wanted to do something special as a way of showing our appreciation. So we invited our dear friend Timmy Mislock (The Antlers, Abandoned Lighthouse) to record a 78 with us during our screening time at the conference. Timmy sang “Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down” for a rapt audience of filmmakers and industry and a few invited friends. And we played it back for everyone right there in the room!

May 20, 2012 at City Winery in New York City

Thanks to all who were able to join us in New York City on May 20th to share in an evening of music celebrating the artists of The 78 Project New York series and the beautiful one-of-a-kind acetates they created. It was a beautiful evening of performances by Leah Siegel of Firehorse, Laura Burhenn of The Mynabirds, Dawn Landes, Vandaveer, The Reverend John DeLore & Kara Suzanne and a momentous occasion when Marshall Crenshaw performed for a direct-to-disc field recording live onstage!

Photos are posted on our Facebook page here.

Marshall Crenshaw’s digitized acetate tracks from the evening are posted here and on our homepage.

Travel + Leisure‘s Carry On blog joined us at City Winery and wrote this excellent dispatch from the night: The 78 Project: Time Travel at 78 RPM.

Pete’s Candy Store was kind enough to concoct us our very own cocktail, The 78 Sour, and the lovely Valerie June cut “Wildwood Flower” in her signature wild style for the 78rpm-loving happy hour crowd.
